Peripheral IV Skills Certification
- Peripheral IV Skills Program is intended for any person who wants to improve or learn, Instructed by Emergency Paramedics with years of experience.
- IV insertion, Didactic practice occurs on several types of human analogs. The student should be observed in their own clinical environment by a colleague. This course can be delivered annually or as retraining. Primarily for LVN, LPN, RN, and Techs.
- (Intravenous) IV Skills Program is a 2.5-4.0-hour course with lectures, skills practice, and final practical skills testing.
- The course covers an in-depth review of anatomy of the venous system, nervous system anatomy, iv cannulation, legal aspects, special considerations, contraindications, documentation, and side effects of IV cannulation. At the completion of the course students will demonstrate their skill on an IV skills trainer with at least two successful sticks.
- Based on American Academy of Orthopedics Intravenous Therapy for Prehospital Providers.
- Intravenous access should always be performed under a doctor's supervision with a doctor’s order for the procedure. This course does not give students carte blanche to perform IV insertion always Refer to your medical director.
- Meets hospital requirement for annual IV certification. NYC Hospitals, Mount Sinai, Presbyterian, and Nursing Homes and care centers in New York.
- Not Included: Specific training on IV pumps, iv infusion devices, central venous devices, central line maintenance and access.
- IV Practice occurs on intravenous traning arms, we dont have options for live practice on live patients.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Medical Director requires an IV insertion course. Can I take this course? If your medical director requires you to be trained to perform this skill under their supervision, then you are permitted to complete all documents and training sheets will be filed with the student and their medical director.
Can I take this course just for CME? Yes, anyone can register and take this course. Your scope of practice is defined by NYS Laws and the Medical Director.
Does this course have to be renewed? There is a recommended renewal date; however, this course does not require it to be renewed. but most local hospital systems will require a two-year renewal course. This is a system/medical director requirement and must be completed by the employee annually.
Our program is designed to work with your clinical training program. We encourage follow up with local onsite clinical trainer with a supervised observed insertion prior to being released on your own. Certificate of completion with valid skills sheets should be kept on file for all students. Students are encouraged to read the textbook and come to class prepared to learn and practice these important skills.
Am I certified to do IVs after this course? No, IV access can only be performed while you’re working as a Health care provider and with a doctor’s order for the procedure. Be sure to document the procedure in the patients chart. Refer to your medical director on additional questions related to your scope of practice and your authorization to perform this skill.
At my job we use a special IV catheter that i never practiced with before, can i bring my own needles to class? Yes you can bring, IV Needles and other supplies you want to practice with to class. You will practice on manikin arms.
Facilities wishing to contract with us to perfom there IV training it's encourage that a sample catheter be provided for demonstration during the class, so students can perfect there techiniques with actual supplies they will be using while working.
